African Food Project - Culture. Community. Co-Existence

The African Food Project is a not-for-profit operating under the auspices of the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).

The African Food Project missions and objectives are directed towards serving the African community at large, by way of:

  • Primarily, building a sustainable agricultural social enterprise through community engagement and development.
  • Reducing the cultural gap between the African refugees and local communities.
  • Providing traditional vegetables to refugees to ease the discomfort and stress in adapting to life in Australia.
  • Building capacity, skill development and promoting social inclusion amongst the African community.
  • Educating and encouraging better nutrition and healthy eating habits among the African refugees.

African community members, with representation on the African Food Project management committee, will engage with the enterprise in a number of ways: as paid staff and volunteers in the following activities:

  • Agricultural: farming, training, marketing and selling produce
  • Community Involvement: planning and organising of community days
  • Expansion: plan growth in various other areas like horticultural therapy, tours for schools, African cooking school and et al.
